Things are getting easier to deal with. I still don't have a job, but continue to look. I acquired a 1966 Airstream Overlander to live in. She (I named her Cher) landed in the side yard of the house I grew up in. My dad, his dog and one older brother still live in it... so I guess you can go home...

Fred (my dog) and I are content in Cher. She needs a good bit of work: some floor repair, then a bamboo click-down floor. Prior to that though... I got tired of only having my bunk to sit on, so I started tearing out the front gaucho (which was missing all of its upholstery).

I had ordered a cute convertable sofa/lounge and bought a rug. Turned out cute I think. I still need to remove the front freshwater tank and pump (Cher will be a stationary live in so I won't need it), so I can push the sofa back further to gain a bit more living room.

Both arms of the sofa fold down, which will come in handy as a second bunk, since I'm going to take out one of the twin bunks so I can have a "studio" space for art. She also needs some new vent covers to stave off some leaks, new appliances and other work. I'll have her gypsied up soon enough.
I'm still reeling from Bruce's passing, even though it was expected... but trying to move on. Packing up the house, trying to sell things, giving things to the hospice that helped me with Bruce and paring down from a 1200 square foot house to a 200 square foot travel trailer... I arranged to trade Bruce's motorcycle for a 1966 26 foot Airstream Overlander. Right now, it's parked in my dad's driveway (since I don't have a job and lot rent there is free). It needs a good bit of work and I'll be posting on it as I work on it. This will be a whole new beginning for me... something I've always wanted to do. My dreams may not be grand... but they are mine and I will live them...

My best friend and soul mate went to live in the eternal sunshine last night. He went peacefully and is no longer in pain. Rest well Bruce... We will be together again someday, my love...

I know I haven't posted much lately and have been cryptic when I have posted... So it's time I told you what is going on... Some of you already know what I'm facing, but most of you don't. The reason for the reticence is that my husband wanted his privacy... and still does... but now that his entire family has received the news, I can post about it and explain why I will continue to be scarce for a while. My loving husband of 8 short years has been battling cancer for 4 years and is now under hospice care here at home with me. I have much support from family and friends... including my friends in blogland. I will keep you posted now and again and will visit your blogs here and there. I have a plan that I'm putting into place to continue my life when the inevitable happens. It will be a new adventure, however sorrowful at first. Thank you so much for all your thoughts, prayers and support. I love you all...

The second installment of "Why I love my Bicycle Commute!" involves the (formerly) overgrown yard of an abandoned house. I say formerly, because, sadly, the yard has since been mowed and cleaned up. Sadly? Yes...
I was upset when I saw that the yard had been mowed and cleaned up. Only the vine covered bush in the middle of the yard remained. At least it is still there and the vines are thriving on it... They are very persistent (Is that why some call them weeds?) and will be back next summer...

Yesterday morning my hubby called me from the grocery store asking about the pin number of the card he was using... Then he asked if I was in the office... Of course... and would I meet him in the parking lot at lunchtime... Of course... So he calls when he gets to my building...

and gives me this! A pretty little pink rose bush for my desk! He said I had a little desk, so he got me little flowers...
A couple of weeks ago I snapped this picture of our resident squirrel... He's sitting in a little Dahoon Holly tree between the building and the parking lot, eating green berries... I see him in this tree a lot.

Today I snapped a picture of him relaxing in his favorite place to hang... Chillin' out in the shade on the wall of our little dining patio... Apparently he lives in the eaves of our building and he's very often spotted sprawled out on the wall.

Next post will be full of pictures of why I love my bicycle commute!

My husband came in from the garage the other day and told me to hold my hands out. I did...

He put these in my hands... It's a good thing I'm not squeamish! A shed caterpillar skin and the resulting pupa... Here's what the pupa looks like up close...
To reveal this! An Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) ... with a wingspan of 5 to 6 inches...

I've been working on an oil painting of a Prairie Warbler on gessoed purple scrapbook paper that looks like old wall paper. I'll post it when I'm done. But I thought I'd post a few of the backgrounds I've been prepping for other oil paintings...

Vintage sheet music adherred to 5" x 7" masonite and coated with with matte gel medium. After a few coats of the gel medium, comes a couple coats of clear gesso and then a final wash of clear gesso with a few drops of turquoise acrylic paint mixed in. Finally before it dries I wipe alot of it off with a paper towel. A singing bird will go on this background.

These vintage illustrated dictionary pages are prepared the same way, but are on 6" x 6" masonite, with the wash being green. I'll be painting Poison Dart Frogs on these.

Metamorphosis in progress... in nature... and in art...

I'm off today, because the Health Dept was closed due to Tropical Storm Isaac.
Most of you know that I paint with oils and chalk pastels and that I've not had good success with acrylics. That might be because I was using craft acrylic paints.
Well I got a 40% off Michaels coupon and bought some cheap artist acrylic paints to experiment with! They were just over $6 with the coupon!

So I put my sewing projects away and got my brushes, palette knives and hard boards out and am going to start playing! I've always been so caught up in the details, that I've always painted realism.
I want to paint more freely... with more expressionism and flair...
Maybe some whimsy... I'm going to try!
I've also started re-reading one of my favorite books.
It inspired a poem the first time I read it. I'll post it soon...
I have to find the file or re-type it in a post.
This time, I'm hoping it will inspire some paintigs!

For the past 20 some odd years (with the exception of about 6 months in the corner of a library) I've had fairly spacious workspaces. Whether they were offices (with windows, no less!), flairly large cubicles (the last 10 years with a wndow!) or a desk among others in a large open room... I've made them my own... made them all reflect who I am...

So I started a new job a couple weeks ago and my workspace consists of a beige "Cubicle." Cubicle? No... this is a desk with particians! Don't get me worng I'm not complaining... I like it very much... It MAKES me stay organized... no room for clutter!

This is my entire workspace... including a pinkish chair... It ain't all beige no more! The white basket under the desk is my bike basket, with my striped totebag in it, and the cardboard box under the drawers is for paper recycling... Making use of every available space! You might notice I'm not using my keyboard tray. I have to keep my chair so high (and my monitor so low) otherwise I have to keep my held tilted back, to be able to look through my bifocals, which makes my neck hurt. I'm going to have it taken out.

This was before I got...
Between my phone and computer monitor is my IMAGINE mug, on the mug quilt I made when I first got my sewing machine... and a little crock holding my beaded teaball. The tea tins (Rose Garden Black and Jasmine Green) are in the top drawer with tissues, lotion, eating utensils, etc.
One the "back wall" as spacious as it is... I have a mesh file, my Food Safety Manager Certification card (the only credential I have that is remotely associated with the program I'm wokring in). Above the card is a photo (mounted on scrapbook paper and framed) of my grandkids, Austin and Ansley, taken by my talented daughter. Next is a post card (mounted on scrapbook paper) of a watercolor by Colette Copeland of A Bird in the Hand. It's called "Hot Climate." She sent it to me among a few others for being so faithful to her blog.
I really love my little workspace... It's very me and such a happy little place! It, my bike ride to and from work and the people I work with make going to work a joy!

I start a new job Monday! Working as a clerk for the County Health Dept. in the Nutrition Division. I'll certainly learn how to eat better than I do. My hubby has been really pushing me to get some exercise and new job is only 2 miles from home...
So... meet Ruby Belle, my new (used) transporation to and from work! She doesn't have a bell... but I just might have to get one. I will need a rear-view mirror, because I'll be riding on roads with no sidewalks, but only a few hundred feet on a through street. I took a nice after supper ride tonight... Boy am I gonna be sore for a while!
Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06778062706708568457noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028970327982731798.post-39559418626236786922012-07-31T09:05:00.000-04:002012-07-31T12:31:45.340-04:00Tuesday Tea...

Having my second cup of China Black this morning from one of my travel cups... The first cup was on the way to taking hubby to work. The second, I'm having while getting ready to go have my fingerprints taken for a background check. If I pass the check, I will be offered a job with my County's health department in the Nutrition Division. I have no idea why they need my fingerprints. The last job I had I dealth with regional and state water supplies... I would think that that position would be more of a threat than that which I am going for... But mine is not to wonder...
I finished this book last night. A good read for the art lover... Historically based novel about Berthe Morisot and Edourd Manet... A story of their love affair and the beginnings of Impressionism. Happy Tea everyone!
I'm really a simple person. It doesn't take much to make me happy... In fact, the more stuff I have the more I feel dragged down. And believe me... I've got stuff! Loads of stuff! And a lot of it is old family stuff... other stuff includes mounting collections of acquisitions over my lifetime. Much of the time I feel like I'm crippled by my possessions. My mom was a compulsive shopper... and I was raised in a borderline hoarder house... We always had too much stuff... and since much of it was passed down through the family there's a strong relationship with it. Yes we have relationships with our stuff and when we want to simplify our lives and downsize, it's often difficult, if for nothing else than the guilt we feel for getting rid of family stuff... whether it be priceless heirlooms or junk.

I've downsized twice in my life... Just given and packed away stuff (and stored it because I couldn't bare the guilt of getting rid of it, but I couldn't live with it anymore) and moved on to smaller and better things. The first time was to the 400 square foot tree house above. I left most everything I had in the care of my (then) husband. The second time, I moved into a 600 square foot duplex on the water (the view out of my bedroom and screened porch is below)... Again, just left it all behind with my (current) husband. Neither time did I intend for the break to be permanent... It was just something I had to do in order to keep my sanity and luckily, both husbands understood this.

Now again I find I'm of the mind that I need to get rid of stuff... I need to simplify my life... So I'm setting out to go through closets, collections and studio and cull, cull, cull... some furniture included. Keeping my husband, by-the-way. But we are getting older and he has had cancer, so we've had to think about what could happen in the future, hopefully later than sooner... I've been thinking seriously about how I want to live when I retire (or beforehand if I can't find another job!). My 90 year old father wants us (or me if that is the case) to move into his house with he and my brother (also a simple person, but who still has stuff attachment)... but to tell you the truth, I don't want the responsibility of the upkeep of a house and more stuff!

So this serendipitous turn of events has come about...I have a bit of money to access (my incomplete retirement account, due to the "reduction in work force" ordered by our infamous new governor). I've always wanted to live in a vintage Airstream trailer... I have a friend that has one and will sell it to me cheaply... I also have another 2 friends with property in the country that they want me to put it on, again cheaply... There's room enough on the property for a small studio (shed with a/c and heat), a veggie and herb garden and a coop for a few laying hens. Sounds like a good retirement to me!

I figure, while at least one of us is working, we could use it as a weekend home (holding off on the garden and poultry for the time being)... Yeah I know... "isn't that just more stuff"? Well yes, but this will give me time to get rid of stuff before I actually live in it right? Hubby, really isn't too keen on spending the money for it right now (not to mention he's not willing to give up his stuff just yet!).

But like Zachary Scott said, "As you grow older, you'll find the only things you regret are the things you
didn't do." I haven't had an awful lot of regret so far (the one that sticks out is not buying the 6.6 wooded acres in north Florida with the well and septic for $4,000 - the perfect place for an Airstream!)... So, why start now?
Diannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06778062706708568457noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028970327982731798.post-60660471865850863532012-07-24T08:09:00.000-04:002012-07-24T08:10:20.399-04:00ADD and Tuesday Tea...

I'm drinking my usual China Black this morning... Hoping that the caffeine will help me STAY awake now... as I've been AWAKE all night. Being a chronic insomniac, I'm used to it taking me a few hours to get to sleep (sort of)... but last night - and the night before - have been worse than usual. Night before last, I was still up at 4:10am. Then when hubby tried to get me up before he left for work I wasn't havin' it! So... again last night, I tossed and turned, was up and down, read, surfed... went back to bed again around four and was still awake when hubby got up at 4:50am... And here I am. The thing is, when I'm like this I can't really DO anything. I get all these creative ideas, but can't act on them. I got some great ideas last night... sculptural products I want to try, Christmas ornament designs... you get the picture.

Plus, I have all these unfinished sewing projects I've been working on...
